Ask for the Bill to Secure a Better Future for All Australians
Australia is at a turning point. Decisions made today will shape the nation we leave behind. Without a legal obligation to consider long-term consequences, short-term policies continue to create long-term problems on climate, housing, the economy, and beyond.
Right now, no one in government is responsible for ensuring that today’s choices don’t become tomorrow’s burdens. That needs to change.
Why This Matters
Successive governments have failed to plan for the future, focusing on election cycles instead of generational impact. This short-term approach has deepened existing challenges and created a system where future Australians inherit the cost of decisions they had no say in.
We cannot afford to keep playing policy “whack-a-mole,” reacting to crises instead of addressing the systems that create them. We need a framework that embeds long-term thinking into governance, one that ensures future generations are considered in every decision made today.
Ask for the Bill
We call on the Federal Parliament to take immediate action by introducing and passing the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill, ensuring that Australia’s policies safeguard the future rather than leaving it to chance.
The Bill Includes:
The choices we make today should set up a future where everyone can thrive, not one where young Australians are left fixing problems that could have been avoided.
That’s why we’re calling for:
A Federal Wellbeing of Future Generations Framework because long-term thinking should be built into how we plan for Australia’s future, not treated as an afterthought.
A Positive Duty to Consider Future Generations because leaders should be expected to think ahead. This would make sure our government takes responsibility for the long-term impact of their decisions.
An Independent Commissioner for Future Generations because someone should be looking out for tomorrow. This role would ensure that future generations have a voice in today’s decisions and that leaders make smarter, more sustainable choices.
A National Conversation on Future Generations because we should shape the future together. This would give Australians a say in the kind of country we want to build, ensuring policies work not just for now but for generations to come.
This isn’t just about politics, it’s about making sure Australia’s future is one we can all be proud of.
Why Now?
For too long, governments have left the hard choices for future leaders and future Australians. The Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill is an opportunity to make future planning someone’s job, shifting governance from short-term fixes to long-term solutions.
With the 2024 UN Summit for the Future concluded and the 2025 federal election approaching, this is the moment to demand better governance, better planning, and better accountability for the future.
